Dating apps, matchmaking, MCC 7273

A payment gateway for online dating, built for recurring members and discreet billing.

OpenGate is a payment gateway for dating sites and apps that need a merchant account for recurring memberships and discreet billing. Dating platforms get refused because their revenue is recurring, their disputes are frequent and their customers demand discretion on the card statement. We underwrite the billing flow, the descriptor and the member verification trail, then take the file to acquirers that understand subscription dating.

Why processors refuse

Why mainstream PSPs refuse online dating

Dating bills under MCC 7273, one of the categories acquirers watch most closely. The objections below repeat across risk desks, and each one is a problem the file can answer.

  1. Recurring billing disputes

Memberships renew monthly on stored cards, and cardholders dispute renewals they forgot, missed or no longer want. Visa lists card-not-present dating among the high-integrity-risk categories an acquirer has to register, so mainstream processors prefer not to hold the account at all.

    How OpenGate handles it

The billing flow is checked before activation: renewal notices, cancellation steps and mandate records. 3DS2 on signup shifts fraud liability to the issuer, and chargeback alerts let you refund before a forgotten renewal becomes a chargeback.

  2. Friendly fraud from members

A member who dated successfully, or unsuccessfully, files a dispute on a subscription they used. The chargeback reads as fraud but is buyer's remorse, and it counts against the merchant either way.

    How OpenGate handles it

The representment toolkit files the usage evidence: logins, matches, messages and the renewal notice the member received. Where the evidence is weak, the alert workflow refunds early and keeps the ratio down. Each dispute is your call, with the evidence assembled.

  3. Discreet descriptor problems

If the statement shows a dating brand, some cardholders dispute to keep the charge off a shared statement. If the descriptor is generic, others dispute because they do not recognize it. Both mistakes produce chargebacks.

    How OpenGate handles it

The descriptor is set with the acquirer before go-live and tested against the billing flow. We check that the name the cardholder sees matches what your receipts and emails say, so recognition complaints have no ground.

  4. Member verification gaps

Dating platforms attract bots, romance scammers and payment fraud at signup. A platform that cannot show verification controls passes fraud losses to the acquirer, and banks price that exposure by declining.

    How OpenGate handles it

We list the verification evidence the acquirers expect and check it during underwriting. Your verification system stays yours. The file documents it, and gateway fraud scoring adds velocity checks tuned for dating signups.

  5. Membership value complaints

Members who find no matches demand refunds, and banks hear the complaint before you do. Refund requests that arrive through the card network become chargebacks when the platform refuses or ignores them, which is how clean dating accounts turn dirty.

    How OpenGate handles it

A published refund policy with a clear window is the first line, and chargeback alerts surface refund requests before they harden into disputes. You decide each case, with the member's usage record already assembled in the dispute file.

The file

How we underwrite a dating merchant account

The file has to show three things: the billing is transparent, the descriptor is safe and the members are real. The documents below cover each, and the underwriter verifies them before any bank sees the file.

Billing and renewal flow

The full subscription flow: signup, trial terms if any, renewal notices, cancellation path and refund policy. Required at onboarding and reviewed before activation.

Member verification records

Evidence of the checks your platform runs at signup: email confirmation, photo moderation, device screening. Evaluated before activation.

Statement descriptor

The descriptor proposed for cardholder statements, matched to your emails and receipts. Decided with the acquirer before go-live, because recognition is this vertical's cheapest dispute defense.

Processing history

Three to six months of statements with chargeback and refund figures. New platforms send a model description and moderation policies instead.

Corporate identity

Registration documents, shareholder structure and identity documents for directors and UBOs. Standard for the vertical and verified before submission.

Payment methods for online dating

Memberships dominate, so the mix is built for recurring billing first.

See every capability
  • Cards (Visa/Mastercard)

Signups and renewals with 3DS2 and card-on-file mandates. The default rail for subscription dating.

  • Recurring billing

Monthly memberships, boosts and premium tiers with retry logic and renewal notifications tuned for the vertical's dispute patterns.

  • Local payment methods

SEPA direct debit and iDEAL in Europe, where dating subscribers often prefer bank rails over cards.

  • Pay-by-link

Links for premium one-off purchases and event features, with expiry and limits.

The process

The file moves through the same four stages documented on /how-it-works: file, analysis, offer, go-live. The renewal flow and the descriptor are the two parts of a dating file that decide placement, so describe both in the application at /apply.

FAQ

Online dating payment processing FAQ

Can I use Stripe or PayPal for a dating site?

Only with their approval, and rarely for long. Stripe lists online dating among the restricted businesses that need extra due diligence, and PayPal requires pre-approval for dating services. Approved accounts can run for months and still close after a dispute spike. OpenGate takes dating files to acquirers that accept MCC 7273 deliberately.

Why do dating members file so many chargebacks?

Mostly friendly fraud: the member used the subscription and disputes it anyway, or forgot the renewal and calls it fraud. Descriptor confusion on shared statements adds more. The defenses are the renewal notices, the usage records and a descriptor the member recognizes.

What documents do I need for a dating merchant account?

The billing and renewal flow, member verification evidence, the proposed statement descriptor, three to six months of processing history and corporate identity documents. The acquirer expects the full set at onboarding. Start with the application, and an underwriter lists what is missing within 1 business day.

How long does it take to open a dating merchant account?

As little as two weeks with a complete file. Descriptor decisions and renewal flow reviews are where dating files usually slow down, so we start there.

Will I have a rolling reserve?

Almost certainly. Subscription dating carries reserve requirements at most acquirers because renewals keep generating disputes months after signup. The percentage and release schedule are written into the offer before you sign.

Will the statement show my dating brand?

The descriptor is decided with the acquirer before go-live, kept discreet within scheme rules, and matched to your receipts and emails. What the cardholder sees is documented in onboarding and stays consistent across renewals.

Do I need to verify members myself?

Yes. Member verification is your platform's system and your obligation. We list what the acquirer expects and check it during underwriting. We do not run the checks for you.

Can I offer free trials that convert to paid?

Yes, when the trial terms are explicit and the conversion is confirmed to the member before the first charge. Trials without clear conversion notices are a top dispute source in dating, so the flow is reviewed before activation.

My dating merchant account was closed. Can I get a new one?

It depends on the closure reason. Describe the closure, your processing history and your billing flow in the application. The underwriter checks whether the reason blocks a new placement and answers within 1 business day.
