Firearms, ammunition, optics, parts
A payment gateway for firearms and accessories that reads the file, not the headlines.
OpenGate is a payment gateway for firearms dealers, ammunition sellers and accessories shops that need a merchant account after a mainstream processor said no. Most of the payment industry treats a holster and a receiver as the same risk. We underwrite the difference: what is serialized, what is not, where it ships and how disputes are answered, so an acquirer can read your catalog line by line.

Why processors refuse
Why mainstream PSPs refuse firearms and accessories
Restricted-business lists, shipping rules and dispute history push firearms commerce off generic platforms. A processor that cannot tell an accessory from a firearm declines the whole catalog.
The category sits on restricted-business lists
Generic processors classify firearms-adjacent commerce as reputational risk and decline by default. An accessories-only shop and a firearms dealer get the same answer.
How OpenGate handles it
We read the catalog line by line and document what is serialized, what is not, and what ships where. The file goes to acquirers who underwrite this vertical, with the classification attached.
Serialized and non-serialized items get merged
A receiver and a red-dot sight are different legal objects with different shipping rules. Risk models that merge them refuse both.
How OpenGate handles it
The file separates product tiers at onboarding: firearms, ammunition, parts and accessories, each with its own compliance note. The acquirer boards the tiers it accepts and we say no where it cannot.
Shipping and transfer rules scare compliance teams
Who may receive a firearm, which carrier may move it and which documents follow the box varies by item and state. Processors decline rather than learn the map.
How OpenGate handles it
We list the shipping and compliance documentation the acquirers expect: your FFL status where applicable, your carrier policy and your age check at purchase. You operate the rules; we document them in the file.
Chargeback scrutiny runs hot
High ticket orders, backorders and buyer's remorse produce disputes, and acquirers keep firearms accounts under closer review than ordinary retail. One disputed order can erase the margin on several sales.
How OpenGate handles it
The gateway layer answers with 3DS2 authentication on first purchases, fraud scoring on every transaction and a representment toolkit that files order records and delivery evidence. The reserve is structured to the dispute profile, not to the headline.
Ammunition and parts add another layer
Ammunition sales carry age restrictions, shipping limits and state rules, and parts catalogs blur into serialized territory. The extra layer is where generic underwriting stops reading.
How OpenGate handles it
The file maps each product tier to its rules. Where a catalog mixes ammunition, parts and accessories, we separate the tiers so the acquirer can approve what it can support instead of refusing everything.
The file
How we underwrite a firearms merchant account
The file must show what you sell, how it ships and how you answer disputes. These are the documents the underwriter will ask for, in the order they are read.
Product catalog with classification
Every SKU grouped into tiers: firearms, ammunition, parts, accessories. The classification decides which acquirer can board the file and at what terms.
FFL documentation where applicable
Where the catalog includes serialized firearms, the acquirer expects a copy of the current federal firearms license. Required at onboarding, not produced by us.
Shipping and transfer policy
Which carrier moves which tier, how transfer and receipt are documented, and how age is checked at purchase. The policy is evaluated before activation.
Terms, refunds and backorder policy
Clear cancellation windows and backorder commitments reduce the disputes that make this vertical expensive. The acquirer reads the policy as part of the file.
Processing history
Three to six months of volume, refunds and chargebacks from your current or previous processor. A closed account does not end the review; the underwriter reads the reasons behind it.
Payment methods
Payment methods for firearms and accessories
High ticket orders, dealer invoices and phone quotes each need a different rail. The mix is set to how this vertical actually sells.
Cards (Visa/Mastercard)
Card payments with 3DS2 authentication on first purchases and high ticket orders, which shifts liability to the issuer on fraud-coded disputes.
Bank transfers
Bank-to-bank payments for dealer invoices, wholesale orders and repeat B2B buyers, at lower cost than cards where the acquiring setup supports them.
Pay-by-link
Quotes, deposits and pre-orders sent as payment links by email, with the order details attached to the transaction.
Virtual terminal
Phone and mail orders entered by your team, with the same fraud scoring applied before settlement.
The process
Describe the catalog by tier, the shipping policy and your processing history in the application at /apply. An underwriter replies within 1 business day with an offer, a document list or an honest no. The four-step process is described on /how-it-works.
